How to play WordQuest

WordQuest is a free online word-guessing game. Every round hides a word from one of 19 categories — animals, food, cities, films and more — and you guess it one letter at a time. Right letters fill in the blanks; wrong ones cost you. Nine mistakes and the round is over. If you've played hangman, you already know the rules — WordQuest adds a score, a level, and thousands of other players to beat.

Solve fast and with few mistakes to score higher. Every win earns XP, raises your level, and moves you up the global, country and friends leaderboards. Stuck? Read the word's clue (−5 points, free in Sprint), or spend a hint to uncover a letter.

Scoring, energy, streaks and duels are all explained in detail. Read the full guide →

Ways to play

Classic

Solo and relaxed. Pick a language and a category, then solve at your own pace. No clock.

Daily Word

One shared puzzle every day for everyone playing in your language, and it's free. Come back daily to keep your streak alive.

Sprint

Beat the clock: fifteen seconds a word. Keep solving to build your run and climb the Sprint leaderboard.

Duel

Challenge a friend to the same five words. You pick three categories, they pick two, and the highest score wins.

Lex's Hunt

A word search with a twist: drag across the grid to pull out the hidden words — some of them you only get a description of. 300 levels in every language, a free Daily Hunt, and duels on the same grid.

Play in English, Dutch, Turkish or Spanish

WordQuest has over 10,000 words across four languages. Each language has its own puzzles, its own Daily Word and its own leaderboard — Turkish players guess Turkish words, Dutch players guess Dutch words. Switch language whenever you like, or play in more than one.

Frequently asked questions

Is WordQuest free?

Yes. Creating an account and playing are free, and the Daily Word costs nothing at all. Every mode is playable without paying — energy refills on its own over time. Extra energy, hints, avatar frames and Premium are optional.

Do I need to download anything?

No. WordQuest runs in your browser on phone, tablet and computer. There is also a free iPhone app if you would rather play from your home screen.

How is this different from Wordle?

Wordle gives you six tries at a single five-letter word, once a day. In WordQuest the words come from 19 categories and can be any length, you reveal them one letter at a time with nine mistakes allowed, and you can play as many rounds as you want — solo, against the clock, or head-to-head with a friend.

Can I play against friends?

Yes. A duel sends another player the same five words — you both play them, and the highest combined score wins. You can also leave a duel open for any player to accept.

Do I need an account?

Yes, and it is free. An account keeps your score, level, streak and duels in sync wherever you play. Signing up takes an email address and a password.

How many words are there?

More than 10,000 across the four languages and 19 categories, and the list keeps growing.

What are WQ Points?

You earn WQ Points ◈ on every game. Spend them in the shop on energy, hints, avatar frames and other extras — you never have to buy them.
